How to keep up fitness when travelling

While I was at home my job allowed me to have free gym membership with it. Now while travelling I have still wanted to keep up my fitness routine. This article will give some tips on what sort of exercises to do while travelling. Obviously while I was at the gym I used machines and the array of many weights which I am now without. The only two fitness equipment we have is a resistance band and an ab roller.
The different body parts we do exercise for are:

– biceps

 -triceps

-Abs

-legs

-back

-shoulders

-chest
Cardio ideas include

-hiit

-running
I have also started doing yoga while travelling I have always wanted to start but never felt like I have had the time.
As we only had a resistance band all of our workouts were tailored to use it. You can pick one up cheap before you travel or like us buy one while you are away, they are a great all rounder piece of equipment that will allow you to workout every essential body part. When travelling it can be easy to see it as a long holiday and eat like you are on one and forget about fitness but trust me you will feel better staying fit and it doesn’t take up much time!
We do a 4 day split workout so work two muscle groups on 3 days with legs on its own for the 4th with 3 days off a week. This is a great way to workout as it gives your body the necessary recovery time and also means while you’re travelling, you’re not working out every day.
Ideas for each work out will be listed below:
-Monday, we usually do all of our workout in the morning before doing anything else with the day and try to keep them to hour sessions. Monday is the day where we train biceps and triceps. We use the resistance band (with some exercises we attach the band to a door or other anchor point) and do the following exercises:
-bicep curls

-hammer curls

-overhead bicep curls

– tricep pushdown

-reverse grip tricep push down

– over head triceps extension

– triceps kickback

-Tuesday, we usually do shoulders and chest. Doing the following exercises.
– Chest Press

-Chest Fly

-Incline Chest Press

-Incline Chest Fly

-Decline Chest Press

-Decline Chest Fly

-Resisted Push Ups
-Wednesday (off)
-Thursday is legs:
– squats

-lunges

-calf raises

-lying side leg raises

-jump squats

-foot fires

-wall sit
-Friday is back and abs:
-sit ups

-mountain climbers

-ab roll out

-Russian twists

-plank

-leg raises

-bottoms up

-reverse crunch

-heel touches
-Deadlifts

-Bent Over Rows

-Seated Rows

-Standing Rows

-Lat Pulldown

-Straight Arm Pulldown

-Reverse Fly

-Upright Rows

-Shrugs

-Lumbar Extension
Obviously while travelling you’re not going to be able to have the luxury of working out with weights or machines so increasing resistance is limited and without a gym or equipment so is your workout. Focusing on form, doing more repetitions and doing the exercises slowly and controlled will still be great and will make you feel a burn.
Nutrition is another big thing to consider while travelling, like I said before you can easily eat bad and not get the nutrition you need while travelling but this doesn’t need to be the case. We downloaded MyFitnessPal an app that is free and can easily let you track what you are eating and whether you are hitting your Macros and other nutritional guidelines for the day.
I hope that this little guide has inspired you to keep fit while travelling or given you some extra ideas of what fitness to do without going to the gym!

What to pack when travelling

I literally used to think packing was just taking everything off its hangers from my wardrobe and putting it all into a suitcase to make sure I have CHOICE? This is absolutely not a option when travelling. Me and Joe have shared a suitcase as we are travelling throughout 3 months from Italy at like 28 degrees to Sofia at -5 degrees. I do miss my beautiful array of clothes but the less things you take mean that you can buy things that you fall in love with on the way, my absolute favourite item I have bought is my pink fluffy coat!
Toiletries!

Have a bag full of necessities such as tablets which are only like 30p from home. I ended up paying £4.82 for ibuprofen while travelling because I ran out. Shampoo and conditioner etc you can get along the way from pretty much anywhere. If you are travelling from place to place try to make things such as shampoo last until you leave to travel to your next destination. There’s nothing worse than having to buy new products and then leave almost full bottles behind because you can’t take them with you. (Due to luggage requirements)

Plenty of socks and pants!

Its likely when your travelling you won’t always be accessible to a washing machine or have time to go to the launderette, you will want to make sure you have plentyyyy of undies and socks and I mean plenty! They’re always able to squeeze into whatever luggage you’re taking so the more the merrier!

Comfy shoes

I’ve been living in my slip on vans as you may of read they are a lot more useful than the dressy heeled shoes I packed (useless for walking in snow). Pack a versatile pair of shoes that you won’t mind wearing day in day out. My vans are comfy and have scotch guard material so will last a long time! You don’t want to take a pair of trainers or shoes that are on their last legs and end up buying a pair while you’re away. And plus like Joe said it’s pretty cool to keep the pair of shoes you travelled in because you can remember all the countries they’ve walked on!
Plenty of clothes for all weather

Taking layers of different clothes is the best idea as you can layer up or down in different weather climates. This is so much better than having huge jumpers that take up your whole bag. Pack crop tops, long sleeve tops, thin jumpers, jacket which is waterproof this is useful for millions of destinations. Also it gives you more options if you aren’t able to wash it all regularly.

Plug adapters

You will need plug adapters this seems obvious but make sure you have it on your list as they are a lot more expensive to buy in the visiting country than before hand. You can also buy multi use ones if you are travelling to all different countries.
Camera or phone

Obviously you will want to capture the memories of your travels you may even want to take a sim only phone if your planning on staying in a specific country for a long time and just buying the local sim. However Joe has got a sim only pay as you go sim (the network 3) which charges you the same rate in a list of specific countries, this has been very helpful.
Debit card

Our debit card we have used has been so useful when travelling we are able to top it up on our phone from our bank account. Look into the credit card that gives you the best rate. We have been able to use it in every country withdrawing cash and topping up without an interest rate. We top up the card from our app in GDP and it automatically changes the currency when you use it in any country. This is so good because you don’t need to keep transferring money into different currencies and can use it just like a normal bank card. You also get the best bank exchange rate at the time of using your card. (Revolut bank)
Copies of your important documents

Ensure to make copies of important documents in case of loosing them. Such as a photocopy of your passports, this ensures that if you are ever stuck in the unfortunate situation of losing it, you still have a copy.

How to save money for travelling

The number one excuse to why people wish to go travelling but can’t is MONEY. There are many ways that mean that anyone can save enough to travel. When I first started saving I didn’t know exactly where I wanted to go I just knew I wanted to explore. While doing my a levels and a part time job I saved money along the way, when I finished my a levels it left me with a 6-8 week holiday in which I saved most of my money.

The first thing you need to do is make a savings account. This is soooo soo important as it allows you to transfer the majority of the money you want to save ( apart from what you need to live off). It is heart breaking working so much and then still being poor but believe me when you are on your dream adventure it is so worth it. A good tip is to make a realistic budget of what you need to actually live off to make sure you are saving the most you can.

While saving you can still have a social life and do the things you want to do but persuade your friends to go out on week days for examples then it’s cheap and you can get drinks for £1. I had many nights out while I was saving me and Joe would only spend £10 together for the whole night. Instead of spending money on brand new clothes (if you actually need new clothes and shoes etc DON’T BUY WHAT YOU DON’T NEED) rummage through charity shops you will surprised at what brands you can find in there. Be frugal with your money.

Sell everything you don’t need! I went through my wardrobe millions of times trying on clothes to see what I actually wear. I found so many things which I hadn’t ever worn! I had things which didn’t fit me anymore but I still had hung up, sell it all! Use websites such as eBay, gumtree, Depop. If you have lots of stuff to sell you can also do a car boot.

Don’t spend money on getting your nails done all the time and doing your eye brows etc. It is so cheaper to learn to do these things yourself, then you can do them from the comfort of your own home. Read up and watch videos and I guarantee you will be able to do it.

Another way to save money is collecting a jar of loose change. The most tempting thing is when you have change in your purse, to just waste it on something pointless as you think it’s not much money. This all adds up, which you will find this out when you cash it in.

Don’t spend money on take away coffees and buying meal deals, make lunches and take them with you, take your own coffee out with you in a travel mug (they’re cheap and a great investment). Doing this will save so much money and often be a lot healthier! Two for the price of one!

Do as many jobs you can to get extra money: wash cars, do gardening any thing and everything. At one point while I was saving I was doing a cleaning job and café work in the same building. I would finish my shift and move straight to the next department. It was so tiring but my savings account was happy.

Get creative! Try and make people gifts and cards instead of buying expensive gifts. It is amazing what you can make for so cheap and people will appreciate the time and effort you have put in.

I hope this will help you save your money for your dream adventures! HAPPY TRAVELLINGG

The things you learn when you go travelling

Pretty much everyone dreams of travelling the world the thing that stops a lot of people, apart from money as it is SO hard to save (you can read in blog number on tips to save) is the fear of the… UNKNOWN, bet you didn’t see that one coming. The second you leave your comforted life in your home town of being able to know your way around everywhere, knowing what public transport goes where, knowing what supermarket sells the best food all of the little things you know and take for granted go out of the window. Because everything is new and different.

The first thing you will learn is that places do not stick to opening times many local restaurants and shops will open as to when they please. They will open depending on many circumstances such as the weather, how busy it is, whether they are tired etc.

You will also learn that other countries have weird ways of doing things (compared to us) such as buying bus tickets from tobacconists. Me and Joe had to walk further than the bus stop to a tobacconist in Italy to be able to buy our bus tickets but it is worth it as when buying the ticket on the bus it is more expensive.

One of the things I realised is that you do not need half of the stuff you think you would need I literally packed the most useless stuff with me such as a pair of shoes I have worn once (you do not need dressy shoes even though you think their may be one time you will not be able to wear trainers). In order to bring those dressy shoes I have now only one pair of trainers to wear and being in Budapest during winter I am wishing I reconsidered and bought my warm dr martens.

You will learn many different cultures and try many different types of food some which you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE I will never forget the taste of gelato in Italy (they also made the cone fresh so it was slightly warm when I ate it) mmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have forgotten what I was actually talking about. OH YES but there will always be some comfort food that you will miss from home but will be crazily expensive where you are, Joes was peanut butter. Can you believe that it was being sold for £5!!! This leads on to my next point.

When travelling, you will learn the most important skill of your whole trip. You will practise this when saving money, the temptation to spend is hard! However when you are in a country and you just see everything your like ooo I want that and that, let’s eat there the temptation is awful but you need to budget. I will organise a monthly, weekly and daily budget this has helped us out many times. What you will learn is that long term travelling is very different than a holiday, me and Joe have spent the same amount of money on a 5 day holiday in Amsterdam to a whole month in a European country. This shows how you cannot splash out every single day while travelling. When having a budget you can and will have lavish days and can do everything on your to do list in your visiting country.

I hope this blog has helped you and maybe made you laugh (a little) at some of our lessons. Remember you can’t learn until you make mistakes. HAPPYYYY TRAVELLING
